Decision for a deeper fairway in the Port of Gothenburg

The Land and Environmental Court has now granted a permit for deepening and widening the fairway, strengthening the quay and the disposal of dredge spoil in a designated location at sea. An application for dispensation regarding the disposal of contaminated material at sea was however rejected, and these materials must be dealt with differently. The decision will allow the Skandia Gateway project’s dock reinforcement work to start according to schedule.

In order to receive the world’s largest oceangoing vessels, the fairway leading into the Port of Gothenburg needs to be deepened by around four metres and six kilometres of fairway need to be dredged. Around 13.5 million cubic metres of spoils will need to be excavated and transported to a designated water area off the island of Vinga. An area which for many years has been used as a repository thanks to its depth and accumulative seabed.

The fairway needs to be deepened to 17.5 metres if the world’s largest ocean-going vessels are to be able to call at the Port of Gothenburg fully loaded. This will prove crucial if Swedish industry is to have greater access to the world in the future. The Skandia Gateway project is already under way and construction is scheduled to begin during the first quarter of next year.

The Skandia Gateway project in Gothenburg has reached a crucial milestone. The environmental impact assessment has been completed, and documents have been submitted for examination by the Land and Environment Court.

On Thursday, Gothenburg City Council passed a resolution to grant more than 1,2 billion kronor (€120,000,000) to finance the Skandia Gateway project, which is aimed at deepening the fairway leading into the Port of Gothenburg. The sum was matched by the Swedish Transport Administration as part of the national infrastructure plan, and as a result the project is fully funded. The three parties now have a firm basis for entering into an implementation agreement.
